2019-06-25 Liaison Day

On Wednesday 3rd July Garfiorth Academy will hold its annual liaison day, where year 6 students that are due to begin Year 7 in September experience a day at High School. For this day only, students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will not be expected to attend the Academy, however, year 10 students should attend as normal. 

2019-06-25 Four for the Miners

Garforth Town have announced a number of new signings for next season. Striker Adam Priestley has returned to the club. The Gibraltar international was previously part of manager Steve Nichol's 2010-12 squad. Another player is midfielder Dan Coupland who was a regular in the 2017-18 season. Left-back Danny Buttle has also committed for next season, making the move from Handsworth. Finally midfielder Adam Porritt joins from Ossett United. Adam is a product of Huddersfield Town Academy 

2019-06-24 Garforth Show

The 2019 Garforth Show takes place at the Miners Welfare Hall Saturday 7th September at 2pm. Classes include Photography, Handicrafts, Home Produce, Flowers, Fruit & Vegetable and Children's Classes. Official opening of the show and prize giving at 2pm by Revd Jane Brown, Rector of Garforth. There will be an auction of produce after prize giving at approximately 3:15pm 

2019-06-24 Knife Crime Statistics

Police statistics about knife crimes across the city reveal that Kippax and Garforth wards have a very low incidence of these crimes. Of the 2,030 crimes reported between 2017 and 2019 only 16 were recorded in Kippax and Methley and 14 in Garforth and Swillington wards. Harewood was revealed to be the safest ward with just 4 incidents recorded. In contrast, 244 knife crimes were recorded in Gipton and Harehills and 207 in Little London and Woodhouse wards in the same period.

2019-06-23 Leeds United Support the Growing Zone

In July 2018 the Leeds United Foundation made a donation of over £1,500 worth of gardening tools and vouchers to support local disabled students with a project in Kippax called the ‘Grow Zone.’ Coaches from the club’s official charity have been back to the allotment recently to check on the progress they’ve made and it was clear to see the hard work and determination that had gone into creating and developing the space into an area the pupils could be proud of. The initiative was introduced to give the students something they could create together from start to finish, giving them the chance to learn new skills and information 

2019-06-22 Motorcycle Seized

A nuisance motorcycle was seized by the West Yorkshire Police off road bike team, after being used without insurance in Kippax and Allerton Bywater. Several S59 warnings were also issued. Enquiries are on-going. 

2019-06-22 History of Money

There will be a Garforth Social at Garforth Library on Monday 1st July from 1.30-2.30pm when Leeds Museums will give a talk about the history of money, from long ago right up to the present. There will be an object handling session which will allow you to pick up and interact with rare and special coins while learning more about their history. There is no need to book, just turn up 

2019-06-21 Checking the Area

West Yorkshire Police carried out speed enforcement checks on Ninelands Lane Garforth on Monday afternoon. They also conducted speed checks in the Westfield Lane area of Kippax on Saturday. This was in response to a number of complaints about speeding by local residents 

2019-06-21 Wellbeing Walks

The RSPB will be running three St Aidan’s Wellbeing Walks on Wednesday 26th June, 31st July and 28th August at 11am. These free monthly walks are open to everyone, especially older people and are dementia-friendly. The walks generally last an hour but are flexible and can be extended for those wanting to explore further, 

2019-06-20 Garforth Golf Club Hosts Seniors

Garforth Golf Club has played host to the Yorkshire Seniors competition this week. Moor Allerton’s Johnny Lawrence lifted the title, winning by three shots after scores of 74 and 71. 

2019-06-20 Medieval Monk Fryston Walks

Monk Fryston Time Team are holding 3 free walking tours focusing on Medieval Monk Fryston on Monday 24th June at 7pm, on Sunday 30th June at 2.30pm and Wednesday 24th July at 10.30am. All the walks start from the Community Centre and will be approximately 2 hours duration. 2019-06-19 Fun Dog Show

There is a Fun Dog Show at Burton Salmon Village Hall on Sunday 23rd June. There are 14 classes to enter. Entry is £3 per class or 4 classes for £10. Registration is at 9am and the classes begin at 10am. There are refreshments and free parking is available. The event is in aid of the village hall fund. 

2019-06-18 Ninelands Summer Fair

The Friends of Ninelands PTA are holding a Summer Fair on Friday 28th June from 5.30pm to 8pm. There will be fun fair rides, beat the goalie, dancing, donkey rides, an inflatable slide, games and a gin bar. Volunteers to help on the day are welcome.

Garforth Fire Station will be holding its annual open day on Saturday 17th August from11am to 3pm. There will be lots to do including Freddie the Fire Engine, crash rescue demo, stalls, face painting, bouncy castle, tombola, barbecue and much more.

There will be a car boot sale on Glebelands field on Sunday 30th June ahead of the Garforth Lions Gala. The car boot sale runs from 8am to noon. 

2019-06-17 Golden Summer Fair

St Benedict’s School ‘Golden’ Summer Fair takes place on Sunday 7th July in the school grounds from 11am onwards. There will be stalls, refreshments, BBQ, entertainment and the chance to view archive photographs from the last 50 years. 

2019-06-16 Ready to Go Again

Garforth Town’s busy pre-season schedule kicks-off on Friday 5th July at Huntington Rovers. North West Counties League side Shelley awaits on Tuesday 9th July, followed by Ilkley Town four days later. The Miners visit last season's FA Cup opponents Northallerton Town on 13th July, before a "Harrogate double" sees them host Railway on the 19th, followed by a short journey to their neighbours Town on the 25th. The final match is at home to Nostell MW on the 27th, before the league season proper begins on Saturday 3rd August. 

2019-06-15 Dick Whittington

Garforth Musical Society’s Christmas pantomime will be Dick Whittington. Performances will take place at the Miners Welfare Hall from Tuesday 3rd December to Saturday 7th December. The show start at 7.15pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are £8 and go on sale from 21st October at SPT Uniforms on Main Street 

2019-06-15 Kippax Teenager Skydives for Air Ambulance

Teenager Leah Bell from Kippax who lost her dad and brothers in a road traffic accident 10 years ago has celebrated their memory by taking part in a 10,000ft skydive, raising more than £1,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Leah was only seven-years-old when she and her family were involved in the collision, in which she sustained a number of severe injuries. She said “I did it to say a massive thank you to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance for their efforts in trying to keep my dad and brothers with me.”

The Spirit of le Tour de Yorkshire award recognises an individual, community or business that fully embraced the essence of the Tour, and Paul Flintoft from Kippax is this year’s worthy recipient. Paul worked tirelessly to bring Kippax together ahead of the race and his butcher’s shop on the High Street became the nerve centre the village’s unbelievable support.

2019-06-11 Arrest Scam Warning

North Yorkshire Police have seen a recent increase in residents being called by someone claiming to be from Law Enforcement or the HMRC claiming there is a warrant out for that person’s arrest. The caller will claim that unless an immediate payment is made, the person will be arrested and/or his house visited by court bailiffs and property removed. This is a scam. Do not respond to the caller’s demand for payment. 

2019-06-10 Farm Break-Ins

Overnight on 5th June two farms in Barkston Ash, Selby noticed someone had been into their farm yards overnight. The first one noticed doors to the grain store were open and the other farm had locks broken to gain entry. Nothing is believed to have been stolen at this time. 2019-06-10 Kathryn Fielding BEM

Kathryn Fielding from Kippax has been given the BEM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her work in bringing sport to the lives of blind and partially-sighted people across Yorkshire. She has led the development of goalball across the UK supporting the 36 clubs that are running. 

2019-06-09 Dementia Roadshow

An NHS dementia roadshow will be held at Kippax Community Centre from 10am to noon on Thursday 27th June. People are invited to come along and learn about dementia, how to seek a diagnosis and find support to live with the illness. 

2019-06-09 Councillor Facing Official Complaints

Garforth and Swillington councillor Sarah Field is under investigation after transgender activists lodged complaints about a speech she gave during a meeting at Leeds Civic Hall, when chairing a session organised by women’s rights group Leeds Spinners. Leeds City Council say the complaints are being considered in line with their complaints procedure. 

2019-06-08 Kennet Lane Housing Plan Dropped by Builder

An appeal by Redrow to the Planning Inspectorate regarding the Council’s decision preventing construction of 52 dwellings on vacant land off Kennet Lane, Garforth has been withdrawn by the builder and no further action will be taken on the Appeal.

A planning application has been submitted to allow Clip’n Climb to open an international indoor climbing centre at East Side Retail Park off Aberford Road in Garforth. The shop unit involved is situated between the Sue Ryder shop and Home Bargains. This requires a change of usage class for the premises from A1 to D2

2019-06-07 Courier Scam Warning

North Yorkshire Police have revealed that Courier Fraud is a common scam seen regularly in this area. The conmen say there has been fraudulent activity at the victims’ bank and the staff at the bank are involved. The victim is then asked to withdraw money to either keep it safe or assist the police with their investigation. A courier attends the victim’s home address to collect the money, bank card or goods the same day.

Leeds East Academy staff played against Garforth Academy staff in a charity football match. The score was 2-1 to Garforth and the event managed to raise £140

2019-06-05 Threat to Visiting Services

A fundraising campaign has been launched to raise £20,000 to avoid services for lonely and isolated older people being cut back or withdrawn. Sherburn Visiting Scheme has been helping people for 30 years, providing Meals on Wheels, shopping buses, transport to medical appointments, social afternoons, day trips and a memory cafe for people suffering from dementia. The long term future of these services has been put at risk following the total loss of funding support from North Yorkshire County Council.

Club members meet on a Monday evenings at 8 pm at the All Saints Church Hall and every Thursday they travel to different places of interest. They have speakers attend on a Monday evening to talk about different aspects of photography and a number of competitions are held through-out the year. New members are always welcome and they provide help and advice covering all aspects of photography.

2019-06-01 Rush Hour Rail Chaos

Thousands of passengers faced long delays and cancellations after all lines were closed at Leeds station on Thursday morning. All trains running to and from the busy station were suspended at around 7am after concerns were raised about a man who British Transport Police said was in 'a precarious position'. Some passengers were stuck on trains waiting outside the station for several hours. Lines were reopened shortly after 11am, after the man was brought to safety and detained under the Mental Health Act

2019-05-31 Prickly Couple at Lotherton

Lotherton Hall’s Wildlife World attraction has taken possession of two African Crested Porcupines. They are thought to be a male and female pair. The porcupines have been joined at Wildlife World by a group of hyraxes, who have also newly arrived on the site. Hyraxes are a small breed of mammal found in Africa which is distantly related to elephants and manatees.

2019-05-28 Operation Eyeball

A brand new fly tipping task force named Operation Eyeball has been formed to tackle fly tipping in rural parts of North Yorkshire and Selby. Bringing together North Yorkshire Police with landowners and district and unitary councils will allow the sharing of intelligence and information to tackle the crime. A key element will be planned and targeted enforcement action days.

RSPB Fairburn Ings marked Dementia Awareness Week by launching its new monthly Wellbeing Walks to connect more people with the Aire Valley. A similar programme has run at St Aidan’s since July 2018. The event is free and led by RSPB rangers. The event will take place on the second Thursday of the month. The St Aidan’s event takes place on the last Wednesday of each month

There was a theft from a Transit Van parked on Brambles Court, Hillam between 9pm on 23rd May and 0545am on 24th May. The offenders gained entry to the vehicle by drilling the locking system. On Tuesday 4th June Garforth Library will be starting a 7-week-long Mental Wellbeing Course with the organisation Humans Being. The course will be every Tuesday, 10.00-12.00, and will be a safe and supportive environment to talk about your problems. This course will tackle many issues, including stress, self-esteem, being true to yourself and setting goals, all with the aim of creating a more confident you. 2019-05-22 Springtime Tax Scams

HMRC have issued a warning about bogus messages in a bid to stop people falling victim to them. Around 250,000 reports of the scams were received this time last year. Scammers are using the spring to target people as genuine tax refunds are also sent out at this time of year by the HMRC. The so-called 'springtime tax scams' target victims with the offer of a tax rebate, primarily via email or text. Victims are encouraged to provide bank details in exchange for such a payment. Such an action is done through a fake government website. 

2019-05-22 Mum and Daughter Dance for Cancer UK

A Micklefield woman who lost her dad to cancer took part in a charity ballroom event with her daughter to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Ann Hughes and granddaughter Nicole Houghton took part in the Ultra Ballroom event at the Royal Armouries Museum to honour Mr Tedhill, who passed away in 2011. The mother and daughter danced together in front of more than 300 people, raising £1,449 for Cancer Research UK. The couple scored 32 points out of 40, finishing in the top 10 out of 27.

G-Fest 2019 takes place on Glebelands playing fields, Garforth on Saturday 20th July from 11am to 9pm. It is a day of outdoor family fun, food, drink and live music in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice. 2019-05-20 Bonfire Missing Again in 2019

South Milford Bonfire and Firework Display Committee has announced that the event will not happen again this year but they are hopeful it will return in 2020. They have made positive progress with the relevant authorities regarding safety measures for events and will be consulting with members of the local community about potential plans in the near future.

2019-05-16 Driver Caught with False Number Plates

A woman blamed her sister when she was caught driving with false number plates. Terrasa Bolton also had bags of cannabis in her car and was subject to a driving ban when she was stopped by officers in Leeds. The mum-of-two gave her sister's details when officers stopped her on Aberford Road, Garforth, on 19th January this year. She was given a six-month jail term, suspended for two years, and disqualified from driving for 12 months. 

2019-05-15 Sky Try Playoffs

Leeds Rhinos Foundation have hosted Sky Try 9s Playoffs for year 7,8 and 9 boys at Brigshaw High School with 330 children and 31 teams taking part. The playoffs decided who would qualify for the finals at Stanningley ARLFC on 22nd May. 

2019-05-15 Clamp Down on Garforth Street Parking

Police were handing out parking fines to cars in the Green Lane area of Garforth yesterday after a number of complaints about parking issues. Officers issued several Fixed Penalty Notices for parking offences and conducted speed checks with a mobile speed camera.

A burglary occurred at a business premise on West Acres, Byram between 4.30pm on 11th May and 1am on 12th May. 2019-05-10 Flying Through Garforth

The Flying Scotsman is coming to Yorkshire in July, hauling a special rail tour from York to Carlisle via Leeds on Sunday 7th July. The train departs York Station at 9.30am and takes the Church Fenton line through Micklefield and Garforth to Leeds, arriving at 10.20am. It returns from Carlisle at 4.15pm, arriving at Leeds at 8.30pm and York at 9.20pm.

More than 1.7 million people visited Leeds’s museums and art galleries last year, an increase of 23 percent on the previous year. There were delays after a crash on the M1 yesterday teatime. It happened between Junction 46 Colton to Junction 47 Garforth causing queuing traffic on the northbound carriageway with tailbacks to junction 45. The accident was cleared by 6.30pm

Leeds City Council propose to permanently expand Micklefield Church of England Primary School, increasing the admission number into the reception class from 20 to 30 places from September 2021 and each year thereafter, eventually creating 70 additional places overall. 2019-05-05 Horse Breeder Jailed

A Leeds Crown Court judge jailed 54-year-old Andrew Hinde of Becca Farm, Aberford, for eleven months and banned him from keeping animals indefinitely for showing a "cavalier attitude" to animal welfare. Hinde kept 20 horses at his own farm and more than 50 ponies in fields he rented at Westfield Farm at Kirk Smeaton. In February 2017 RSPCA inspectors went to Westfield Farm and found some of the ponies were in poor condition. In July 2017 RSPCA inspectors went to Becca Farm and seized 20 horses after finding that some were being kept in conditions that didn't meet their needs.

2019-05-04 Police Link two Pub Burglaries

Police believe break-ins at two pubs in Leeds on the same night are linked. Raiders broke into The Regent in Chapel Allerton at 2am and The Lord Gascoigne in Garforth two hours later in the early hours of Tuesday 23rd April. Police received reports of a burglary at The Lord Gascoigne pub, in Aberford Road, Garforth just after 4am. Three suspects used a ladder to reach a first floor window and broke into an office. They were disturbed by the alarm and left empty handed. One of the suspects at both incidents was seen on CCTV wearing a black hooded top with a white logo across the front. 

2019-05-03 Lotherton Food and Drink Festival

Lotherton Hall is hosting its popular food festival this Bank Holiday weekend. Street food stands, bars, and entertainment will be on offer at the stately home in Aberford. The event has been running since 2016. The event takes place on Saturday 4th May, Sunday 5th May and Monday 6th May from 10am-5pm. Day tickets on the gate are £8 for adults and £4 for children. 2019-05-02 Tributes to Chris Walters

Tributes have been paid to a former RAF serviceman and verger of Selby Abbey. The funeral took place on Tuesday, at Sherburn Methodist Church, of Chris Walters. Mr Walters, 73, lived in Sherburn, and was verger at the abbey for more than 20 years. He died following a long battle with vascular dementia. Born in Burton Salmon, the son of local Methodist preacher Lawrence Walters, and attended primary school in the village before winning a scholarship to King’s School in Pontefract. After leaving school, he became an apprentice electrician at Micklefield Colliery, and in 1969 volunteered to join the RAF. Mr Walters was chair of Monk Fryston Parish Council

The Tour de Yorkshire comes past Garforth Academy again this year on Friday 3rd May. Due to the earlier road closure this year the school has taken the decision to close 30 minutes early on Friday 3rd May to ensure both staff and students can make their way home safely prior to the road closure. School will finish at 2pm and there will be no after school activities, detentions, homework club or revision on this day.  

2019-04-29 Eggcellent Day Out

Squires Cafe Bar in Sherburn recently held their annual ‘Squires Egg Run’ which raised over £1600 for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and donated around 700 eggs to causes helping disadvantaged youngsters. Approximately 560 bikers took part in the race which was held on Sunday 14th April, doing a 25 mile route to hunt for eggs, starting and finishing at Squires Cafe.

On 11th April 2019, North Yorkshire Police launched a Fraud Awareness page on Facebook. The page has been created to serve the residents of North Yorkshire to promote awareness for frauds and scams happening in their area. The page is named as North Yorkshire Police Fraud Awareness which will be in the results of a search. It is staffed by Fraud Ambassadors from each local policing teams. There will be advice and safeguarding information posted on a regular basis as well as events happening in your area.

Garforth Town were in irresistible form as they romped to a four goal lead within half an hour of the kick off away at Athersley Recreation on Saturday. 2019-04-27 Builder Helping Swimming Club

Kippax Amateur Swimming Club has received a £1000 boost from Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire’s Community Champions initiative. The donation will be used to purchase training equipment including floats, fins and diving blocks. Persimmon is building homes at the Woodside development in Kippax. The swimming club was founded in 1975 and has more than 100 members.

Plans have been submitted to convert a former hairdresser’s shop on Main Street Garforth into a café and cocktail bar. The applicant Dan Gore has been running a mobile cocktail bar from a VW camper van and now wants to expand his business with a permanent location.  

2019-04-26 TdY Road Closures

The council have announced timings of the road closures for the Tour de Yorkshire race. Roads will be closed for between half an hour to an hour to allow for the cyclists to safely enter and leave the area, with start and finish locations expected to be closed all day. The race passes through Kippax on Friday 3rd May. The ladies race will close affected streets in Kippax from 9.40am to 10.40am and Garforth from 9.40am to 10.40am. The men’s race in the afternoon will affect Kippax from 3.15pm to 4.15pm and Garforth from 3.20pm to 4.10pm 

2019-04-26 Operation Close Pass

Motorists who passed too close to cyclists on the A63 near Garforth were stopped by police as part of a 'close pass' operation last Saturday. They were looking for drivers who were driving too close to cyclists, failed to give way at junctions or those who were distracted from having a proper view while driving. Officers stopped and spoke to 11 drivers in one hour about close passing. In 2017 fifty five cyclists were killed or seriously injured in Leeds

2019-04-11 Creative Site Given Green Light

A decision by planners to approve a large-scale extension to the film and TV production facility at a former RAF base near Tadcaster could create the region’s largest “park” for creative industries. Its owner, the Garforth-based developer Makin Enterprises, wants to build a “flagship HQ-style” building on the site and convert aircraft existing hangars into more space for film sets. They say the Church Fenton site could eventually support 1,800 permanent, skilled jobs in the creative and digital sector.

The victim is told there is an outstanding tax bill against their name which must be paid immediately.. 2019-03-21 Man Dies in Sherburn Accident

A 56-year-old man died after his car mounted the pavement and struck bollards and a stationary vehicle in Sherburn at about 8.20pm on Saturday, 16th March. The black Volvo V50 went on to the pavement on Low Street outside the Spar shop. The driver was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene.

15 cars were caught driving over the speed limit in Garforth during a police operation on Tuesday morning on Ninelands Lane and Derwent Avenue. This action was due to a number of complaints received from local residents.

2019-03-15 Garforth Conman Sentenced

Garforth man Christopher Bundza, aged 54 appeared in court after purporting to sell tickets to a Justin Bieber concert that he never had. He duped several members of the public by claiming he had tickets for the 2016 concert in Sheffield, taking the money but never producing the tickets. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday to be sentenced for three counts of fraud worth £700. Bundza was jailed for nine months but the jail term was suspended for a period of 18 months. He was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work

Communities are being challenged to create the most dazzling visual spectacular yet for the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire. This year’s cycle race route will pass through 151 villages, towns and cities between May 2 and May 5, with images of Yorkshire beamed to 190 countries worldwide. In 2018 Garforth local Samantha Whitley was awarded the Spirit of Le Tour prize for her tireless work in the community and Kippax was named Best Dressed Village of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Garforth based sports and racing car manufacturer Ginetta has unveiled its new 583hp supercar at the prestigious Geneva Car Show. The all-new Akula, which is the Russian word for shark, will cost £340,000 in Britain. Production starts in 2020 and 14 of expected 20 cars produced that year have already been sold.

A Kippax couple Nicola and Phil Bentley say they are at “breaking point” after finding 700 defects in their brand new Persimmon Homes house. The couple claim there are 700 faults with their newly-built house and the builder has only fixed 10 per cent of the faults in ten months. The house was bought off plan and the couple were not allowed to inspect the house prior to signing the contract.

More than 50 brass bands descended on Huddersfield Town Hall at the weekend for the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships 2019. In the Third Section Kippax Brass Band took first place with Wetherby and District Silver second, with both qualifying for the National Finals which will be held in September at Cheltenham racecourse.

Councillor Mel Hobson has agreed to use funds from his allowances to pay for the footpath in Cricketers Way, Sherburn to be resurfaced. The councillor has received many complaints from residents regarding the state of the footpath and issues with litter and has decided to take action. Sherburn parish council has been told the village will now have a police officer on duty at all times. Due to recent crime increases, such as thefts and break-ins there will now be a PSCO on duty every day including early mornings and late evenings. 2019-03-02 Super Car Coming to Gaforth

Ginetta Cars have announced plans to start building supercars in their Garforth factory in 2020. The name of the car is yet to be decided and the price is expected to be around £400,000. In the first year they expect to build 20 and already have orders for 12 of them. Ginetta is best known for its racing cars.

Garforth Independents councillor Mark Dobson put forward two changes to the proposed council budget at a mammoth 5 hour meeting of the Council on Wednesday. He proposed scrapping waste disposal charges and an increase in funding for dementia residential care and housing. All changes proposed by other parties were rejected.

The Miners fell to a third straight league defeat 3-0 at the weekend as visiting Maltby Main comfortably took the points in a scrappy game containing little for home supporters to cheer. 2019-02-22 Backlash Over Traveller Proposal

A huge backlash against plans to transform a Kippax allotment into a traveller pitch has led to more than 180 people lodging objections. The planning application has been submitted to convert the allotment off Sandgate Terrace to create the pitch for one caravan, plus a dayroom, mobile home and parking space. The proposal has caused widespread concern in the community and led to a public meeting attended by more than 100 people at Kippax Central Club.

2019-02-09 Thefts from Vehicles

Between 1pm and 3pm on 6th February two vehicles were broken into whilst at a works compound in Hazlewood Castle. The first vehicle had the driver's window smashed and a blue coloured rucksack containing papers and a diary were stolen plus a grey tool. 2019-02-08 Rail Strikes Suspended

Strikes on Northern rail have been suspended after a "major breakthrough" in a long-running dispute over plans to axe guards on trains. Members of the RMT have taken 47 days of industrial action over two years and were due to walk out on the next two Saturdays. The RMT said the company had now offered a guarantee of a conductor on all trains.

2019-02-06 Garforth Parking Charges Plan Scrapped

Leeds City Council has scrapped its controversial plans to introduce parking charges in local town centre car parks. It follows pressure from opposition councillors, who claimed introducing the charges would harm already-struggling businesses. Plans to see charging introduced at three car parks in Guiseley, Wetherby and Garforth had been included in the authority’s draft budget proposals, published late last year, and were expected to generate the authority an extra £200,000-a-year. But the council’s final budget proposals released yesterday show the charges are no longer part of the authority’s proposed final budget for 2019/20

2019-01-30 Main Street Accident Victim Named

Police have named a woman who died in a crash involving a reversing truck in Garforth as Kathleen Wilkinson, aged 71, from Garforth as they continue to appeal for information about the collision. She was fatally injured on an unnamed road between Main Street and Halliday Road when a Mercedes drop-side Scaffolding truck reversed out of the junction onto Main Street.

2019-01-25 Micklefield School Consultation

A consultation on the permanent expansion of Micklefield Church of England Primary School runs from 28th January to 4th March. The proposal is to admit an additional 10 children into reception from September 2021, increasing the number of places from 20 to 30. As these places are filled and these children progress through the school, this would mean that eventually an additional 70 places would be available across all year groups. Community drop-in sessions will be running at the school on Monday 11th February from 8.40-9.20am and Wednesday 13th February from 5.30-7.30pm so that anyone who can go along, ask questions and share their views.

2019-01-24 Woman Dies in Main Street Accident

Garforth Main Street was closed on Wednesday afternoon after a 71 year old woman was seriously injured after being hit by a car. The air ambulance was called and bus services were diverted away from the busy shopping centre. The elderly woman was given medical attention, but died at the scene. A 34 year old man, who was driving a flatbed truck, remains in police custody.

2019-01-20 Reward for Hit and Run Information

Castleford businessman Neil Liversidge has offered £1000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the driver of a car in collision with a motorcyclist on the B1222 near Peckfield at around 4.40pm on 6th January. The driver left the scene without stopping. North Yorkshire Police investigating the hit and run believe the car involved was a silver saloon, possibly a VW or a Skoda.

Penistone Church beat Garforth 3-1 to become new promotion favourites after the other rivals for the top spot all dropped points. The police are asking residents to remember to keep car keys as far away as possible from your parked vehicle. Thieves are using a *signal booster* device which triggers the vehicles keys into unlocking the vehicle. Overnight 7th to 8th January 2019 three vehicles were stolen from 2 different addresses on Pasture Way, Sherburn in Elmet. The vehicles are a BMW Red Coupe, Mercedes C250 D AMG in Blue and a Mercedes CL100 estate in white. The BMW and the blue Mercedes have since been located in another force area. In a letter to the Evening Post Councillor Tom Leadley has revealed that one of the proposals in Leeds City Council’s Initial Budget Proposals for 2019-20 is to introduce parking charges on city council owned car parks in three town centres, Wetherby, Garforth and Guiseley. Councillors will be able to put forward their own ideas and amendments to these proposals and hopefully won’t be supporting the principle of having parking charges in local town centres

Two independent government-appointed inspectors have recommended that the Leeds Site Allocations Plan should be modified to exclude the major green belt sites at Peckfield and Parlington, Strong representations against the Peckfield site were made by Garforth Neighbourhood Planning Forum and local councillors. Casual bar worker Daniel James Bell hid the key of the Wheatsheaf pub in Sherburn and burgled it when the landlady was on holiday. He let himself in at 6am on 15th November and took £60 from a jar. His actions were caught on CCTV and he was recognised by the landlady on her return from holiday. Bell pleaded guilty to burglary and was given a 12 month community order and ordered to pay £386

2018-12-28 Two Rescued from Christmas Fire

Two people had to be rescued when fire broke out at a house in Long Meadow Gate, Garforth at around 3.30am on Christmas Day. It is believed the fire broke out in the kitchen. Fire Crews from Garforth and Killingbeck attended. The two occupants were treated for smoke inhalation by the ambulance service at the scene

Hillam Monk Fryston Cricket Club has secured a £60,000 grant from Biffa Award, part of the Landfill Communities Fund. The money will enable the existing cricket pavilion to be fully insulated. New doors, windows and a heating system will allow the pavilion to be used as an all year-round community facility. At the moment, the building and its environment is only useable in summer months.

Hillam Parish Council is setting up a Village Emergency Telephone System to support the use of the defibrillator - this is where local individuals volunteer to collect/deliver the defibrillator to the location it may be needed in the village. It is essential in defibrillation cases that the responder stays to deliver CPR and ensure oxygen is still pumping through the casualty's body instead of losing time collecting the defibrillator.

Sherburn High School has gratefully accepted over £300 worth of new books for its school library thanks to a magnanimous gesture from parent Rachel Parkes. Rachel, whose son James attends the school, entered a competition launched by Scholastic Book Clubs called James Patterson’s Big Book Giveaway and she won! Rachel had to say why she thought Sherburn High deserved to win so she told them how winning the books would raise student morale after a fire at the school had caused significant damage in July last year.

A power cut at the Elf Experience at Lotherton Hall on Saturday night caused the event to be evacuated after visitors to the woodland walk were left in darkness. The power cut was caused by a blown fuse following a downpour of rain. The event was back to normal the following day

2018-11-14 Hillam Burglary Appeal

On Monday 12th November between 4pm and 6 pm a property in Chapel Street, Hillam was broken into and valuables stolen. The property owner would be grateful if anyone with CCTV in the vicinity can look to see if there are any indications of unusual movement of vehicles or pedestrians in the area at that time or earlier in the day. 2018-11-12 Selby Road Closures

There will be road closures at Charlie Sweeps Corner ( Selby Road/ Leeds Road junction) on consecutive Sundays from 18th November to 9th December between the hours of 8.30am and midnight for road surfacing and road markings. Diversions will be in place.  

2018-11-11 Lotherton Christmas

Lotherton Hall has revealed that tickets for its Santa Weekends are selling fast. A host of activities will be on offer including the Twelve Days of Christmas woodland walk, the Elf Village, the Christmas Courtyard and the North Pole where children can help Santa’s elves in their workshop.. The event runs from 23rd November to 23rd December and Santa will be in residence daily from 3.40pm

Leeds based Northern Ballet are offering dance classes to Parkinson’s sufferers at Garforth Squash and Leisure Club. The weekly sessions improve balance, flexibility and strength through ballet. 2018-11-10 Police Appeal over Stolen Motorbikes

Police are appealing for help to find two stolen motorbikes. A blue Suzuki and a green Triumph were taken from Kippax on 26th or 27th October. The bikes have since been sighted in Seacroft and Gipton

2018-11-09 WW1 Centenary Event

There will be a community event on Friday 9th November 2018 from 4pm – 6pm in Aberford Village Hall to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Light refreshments will be served and The Village Harmonies Choir will attend to sing songs. Police are stepping up patrols in villages around Garforth after a spate of vehicle break-ins. Thieves are using boosters to open the doors of keyless entry vehicles. Police advise people to keep their keys as far away from their vehicles as possible

2018-11-06 More Train Strikes Till Christmas

A further series of 24-hour strikes is to be staged by Northern rail workers in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Services will be affected by five walkouts on Saturdays between 17 November and 15 December. Industrial action is already scheduled for 3 and 10 November regarding the firm's plan to remove train guards.

The latest information release by HS2 has revealed that building the track around Garforth would result in a permanent loss of approximately: 6.6ha (23 per cent) of Hawk’s Nest Wood Local Wildlife Site. Construction of the Proposed Scheme would also involve the removal of a listed wall at the Grade II listed Barrowby Hall 

2018-11-05 Cup Success for Miners

A dramatic injury time goal by Shaquille Clarke-Adams secured Garforth Towns' place in the next round of the league cup beating Shirebrook 2-1. After falling behind to an early goal, Clarke-Adams scored an equaliser mid-way through the second half to set up a barnstorming finish in which he popped up again to grab the last-gasp winner

2018-11-01 Lighting of the Beacon

Sherburn Parish Council are looking for someone to play ‘The Last Post’ on the bugle during their upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 11th November. To mark and commemorate the end of the First World War, Sherburn White Rose Football Club will be lighting a beacon in memory of the brave soldiers. Nellie’s Tree has been crowned the UK's tree of the year beating a giant redwood in Northern Ireland, a Scottish spruce and a Welsh oak to scoop the overall prize. Nellie's tree will now go on to represent the UK in the European tree of the year contest in early 2019.

2018-10-28 Miners Lose Away

The Miners lost 3-1 at Handsworth Parramore on Saturday. Having scored eight goals in their last two games, Handsworth proved too dangerous in front of goal for Garforth. The Miners put plenty of effort in, but the creativity and guile is missing from their game at the moment. At three nil down, James Beaston scored a rare goal to give Town hope, but Garforth couldn't build on it. 

2018-10-28 Attempted Break In

On the 22nd October between 6pm and 9pm a shed and a container had the padlock cut off in Newthorpe, South Milford, Selby. A beech tree grafted into an N-shape to woo a woman called Nellie has been named as England's Tree of the Year. The Woodland Trust, which runs the competition, said Nellie's Tree at Aberford, near Leeds, was formed almost 100 years ago by Vic Stead.

Police in North Yorkshire are working to reunite hundreds of suspected stolen animals with their rightful owners. More than 400 animals – including dogs, sheep, goats, rabbits, turkeys, ducks and chickens – have been seized as part of the investigation, and are being looked after in secure locations.

2018-10-20 Oh Brother

When nine-year-old Jamie Broadbent won a brand new bike in his school’s summer raffle, the Ninelands Primary School pupil opted to use his £150 voucher, donated by Redrow Homes, to buy a bike for his younger brother Jonny, aged 3. The raffle was organised by the school’s parent teacher association, the Friends of Ninelands (FON) alongside the annual summer fair. The raffle and fair combined raised a total of £2,461, which will be used to improve outdoor spaces and enhance the school grounds.

2018-10-18 Garforth Remembrance Day

To mark the centenary of the end of the First World war this year’s Community Act of Remembrance will be held at the new War Memorial in Garforth Cemetery at 10.45am on Sunday 11th November. There will be a procession from St Marys Church to the cemetery at 10.30am and there will be an Act of Remembrance in St Mary’s Church for those who cannot go to the Memorial. Afterwards refreshments will be served in St Marys Parish Centre
