Garforth Lions charity golf tournament takes place at Garforth Golf Club on Friday 10th May. It is in aid of the Lions local charities and Alzheimer’s Research. The cost is £100 per team of four players 

2019-02-22 Backlash Over Traveller Proposal

A huge backlash against plans to transform a Kippax allotment into a traveller pitch has led to more than 180 people lodging objections. The planning application has been submitted to convert the allotment off Sandgate Terrace to create the pitch for one caravan, plus a dayroom, mobile home and parking space. The proposal has caused widespread concern in the community and led to a public meeting attended by more than 100 people at Kippax Central Club.

Work has started on the 1800 home Skelton Gate development just southwest of Swillington at Junction 45 of the M1. A 170 acre former open cast site will accommodate 1100 new homes with an application for a further 700 homes pending.

The owner of a bike stolen in Garforth on Tuesday has offered a £500 reward for its safe return. It is a black and blue giant TCR road bike with a logo seat and electric gears. Anyone with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference 0968

Bird watchers have been flocking to St Aidan’s Nature Park to photograph the rarely seen Bearded Tits. These shy birds inhabit reed beds and so to see them in numbers out in the open has caused quite a stir

Leeds Rhinos Foundation brought the Betfred Super League, World Club Challenge and NRL trophies to Strawberry Fields Primary School last Friday for the 200 children to see ahead of the World Club Challenge match on Sunday in which Sydney Roosters beat Wigan by 20-8

St Benedicts School opened fifty years ago on Wednesday 27th February. To celebrate the anniversary there will be a Mass followed by refreshments in the school hall. 

2019-02-19 Residents Support Kippax Plan

The Referendum for the Kippax Neighbourhood Plan was held on 14th February. The count showed that 1337 votes were cast in favour and 170 against with 2 spoiled papers. The turnout was 20.2 percent.

Garforth Town slipped to a second straight defeat at Hall Road Rangers by 2-0.Two first Half goals were enough to seal the win, as Garforth couldn't muster enough threat after the break to worry the home side.

Garforth Musical Society is stepping up its search for new talent. Officials are concerned about membership levels and want to recruit more people, particularly children, as most of the group are aged 40 plus now. Garforth Musical Society began just after the Second World War.

A planning application to build almost 300 houses on land south of the A63 Selby Road in Garforth that was originally thrown out by Leeds City Council has been approved on appeal by Government Inspectors.

This year marks Lotherton’s 50th anniversary as a public museum and illustrates the importance of the Fashion Galleries, with exhibits dating from the 1600s to the present day

Staff and residents of The Hollies Care Home in Garforth held their annual Bake Off to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Carer Barbie Keenoy won the competition with her Rolo Cake. 

2019-02-10 Miners Lose to Worksop 2-1

A first half penalty put Worksop Town in the driving seat, but a Dan Williams goal cancelled their lead out before the break. The Tigers restored their lead in the second half and ,despite a few close efforts from the Miners, held on for the win.

Garforth based Ginetta cars have sponsored talented cyclist, Billy Ladle, as he gears up for his first season in the under 10's youth series. Billy is one of the brightest young cycling talents in Yorkshire. Ginetta has an established relationship with cyclists after welcoming multi Olympic champion Chris Hoy and World Sprint Champion Jason Kenny to their motorsport family and are keen to encourage local youth talent.

2019-02-09 Thefts from Vehicles

Between 1pm and 3pm on 6th February two vehicles were broken into whilst at a works compound in Hazlewood Castle. The first vehicle had the driver's window smashed and a blue coloured rucksack containing papers and a diary were stolen plus a grey tool. 2019-02-08 Rail Strikes Suspended

Strikes on Northern rail have been suspended after a "major breakthrough" in a long-running dispute over plans to axe guards on trains. Members of the RMT have taken 47 days of industrial action over two years and were due to walk out on the next two Saturdays. The RMT said the company had now offered a guarantee of a conductor on all trains. 

2019-02-07 Train Breakdown at Rush Hour

A broken down train caused delays to rail services between Leeds and York during Monday morning rush hour. The rail line was blocked and some services halted after the breakdown at Micklefield. Trains to York were disrupted till 10am as engineers worked on the fault

2019-02-06 Garforth Parking Charges Plan Scrapped

Leeds City Council has scrapped its controversial plans to introduce parking charges in local town centre car parks. It follows pressure from opposition councillors, who claimed introducing the charges would harm already-struggling businesses. Plans to see charging introduced at three car parks in Guiseley, Wetherby and Garforth had been included in the authority’s draft budget proposals, published late last year, and were expected to generate the authority an extra £200,000-a-year. But the council’s final budget proposals released yesterday show the charges are no longer part of the authority’s proposed final budget for 2019/20

Latest figures reveal Leeds received a total of 8,322 service requests relating to pest control between January 2017 and December 2018. Worst area was Gipton and Harehills. Rats and insects made up the bulk of this wards pest problems, with 264 and 155 requests respectively. LS25 areas did not appear in the top 12 Affected List

The Unite union has announced it is preparing to ballot its 3,500 members at First West Yorkshire over possible industrial action following the dismissal of two of its senior representatives. A walkout by First staff in 2016 saw buses on 40 routes grind to a complete halt.

2019-01-30 Main Street Accident Victim Named

Police have named a woman who died in a crash involving a reversing truck in Garforth as Kathleen Wilkinson, aged 71, from Garforth as they continue to appeal for information about the collision. She was fatally injured on an unnamed road between Main Street and Halliday Road when a Mercedes drop-side Scaffolding truck reversed out of the junction onto Main Street.

There were three miles of queuing traffic on the A64 between the A659 and the A1(M) yesterday morning following an early morning accident that partially blocked the road. The road reopened around 7.45am.

A man has been released under investigation following the death of a 71 year old woman in a road traffic collision in Garforth. The woman was hit by a truck which was reversing out of a junction off Main Street

2019-01-25 Micklefield School Consultation

A consultation on the permanent expansion of Micklefield Church of England Primary School runs from 28th January to 4th March. The proposal is to admit an additional 10 children into reception from September 2021, increasing the number of places from 20 to 30. As these places are filled and these children progress through the school, this would mean that eventually an additional 70 places would be available across all year groups. Community drop-in sessions will be running at the school on Monday 11th February from 8.40-9.20am and Wednesday 13th February from 5.30-7.30pm so that anyone who can go along, ask questions and share their views.

2019-01-24 Woman Dies in Main Street Accident

Garforth Main Street was closed on Wednesday afternoon after a 71 year old woman was seriously injured after being hit by a car. The air ambulance was called and bus services were diverted away from the busy shopping centre. The elderly woman was given medical attention, but died at the scene. A 34 year old man, who was driving a flatbed truck, remains in police custody.

The RSPB is planting over three thousand trees at St Aidan’s Nature Park to transform hillside meadow into scrubland habitat for birds, mammals and insects. The work is funded by the Environment Agency

A person was cut free by Garforth and Castleford fire crews on Friday night and taken to hospital after a road collision on the Ridge Road just before midnight. Only one vehicle was involved in the incident

2019-01-20 Reward for Hit and Run Information

Castleford businessman Neil Liversidge has offered £1000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the driver of a car in collision with a motorcyclist on the B1222 near Peckfield at around 4.40pm on 6th January. The driver left the scene without stopping. North Yorkshire Police investigating the hit and run believe the car involved was a silver saloon, possibly a VW or a Skoda.

2019-01-19 Five Arrested for Robberies

Five people have been arrested after a string of robberies and attempted robberies in Leeds and Wetherby including Tesco Alwoodley and Sainsbury's Kippax robberies. Four men, aged between 26 and 46 and one 43-year-old woman were arrested in Seacroft last night on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robberies and burglaries.

St Mary’s Church Swillington holds its Snowdrop Weekend on 23rd February from 10am till 3.30pm and on 24th February from noon to 4pm. Visitors can admire the snowdrops in the church yard. There will be stalls and refreshments. The weekend ends with a concert by White Rose Male Voice Choir at 3pm 

2019-01-14 Miners Lose

Penistone Church beat Garforth 3-1 to become new promotion favourites after the other rivals for the top spot all dropped points. Alex low gave Garforth a dream lead early on, but Church turned it around to go in 2-1 up at half time thanks to strikes from Sam Scrivens and Jordan Coduri. In a pivotal moment, Towns' recent signing Kane Bingley had a penalty saved just minutes after the break. Scrivens then gave the home side a two goal cushion with his second and their third of the game to run out comfortable winners.

The League Against Cruel Sports has written to council leader Judith Blake asking the council to stop allowing the Badsworth and Bramham Moor Hounds holding a meet in Aberford on New Year’s Day amid claims that animals are still being chased. In the letter it is claimed that the November hunt chased a fox and a deer with hounds.

There has been a recent spate of malicious damage to vehicles in Micklefield, tyres slashed and some cosmetic damage etc. This has been happening late in the evening or overnight. 2019-01-11 Car Theft Advice

The police are asking residents to remember to keep car keys as far away as possible from your parked vehicle. Thieves are using a *signal booster* device which triggers the vehicles keys into unlocking the vehicle. A second piece of advice would be to put the keys inside a metal container which will hopefully reduce the signal getting to the keys.

2019-01-10 Inconsiderate Parking Warning

It has become apparent that some people are parking inconsiderately in and around Sturton Lane / Sturton Avenue in Garforth. Some of these vehicles are causing obstructions to driveways, the roadway and pavements. Local PCSO’s will be patrolling the area over the coming months and will be taking action where necessary. Fixed penalty tickets may be issued to those who continue to park irresponsibly. 

2019-01-10 New Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

Aberford parish council has been advised a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme has been set up for the Leeds Outer North East policing area. A letter has been issued asking for volunteers to assist with the scheme by creating small Neighbourhood Watch Groups. 2019-01-08 Car Thefts in Sherburn

Overnight 7th to 8th January 2019 three vehicles were stolen from 2 different addresses on Pasture Way, Sherburn in Elmet. The vehicles are a BMW Red Coupe, Mercedes C250 D AMG in Blue and a Mercedes CL100 estate in white. The BMW and the blue Mercedes have since been located in another force area. Garforth Academy school canteen has switched to biodegradable packaging for sandwiches, baguettes, soup, take-outs, fruit pots, cups and even cutlery on Fridays. Plastic bottles can be recycled using the recycling bins in the canteen and on all the corridors.

St Benedict's Catholic Primary School will be hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration Ball at the Holiday Inn, Garforth on Friday 24th May from 7pm onwards. In a letter to the Evening Post Councillor Tom Leadley has revealed that one of the proposals in Leeds City Council’s Initial Budget Proposals for 2019-20 is to introduce parking charges on city council owned car parks in three town centres, Wetherby, Garforth and Guiseley. Councillors will be able to put forward their own ideas and amendments to these proposals and hopefully won’t be supporting the principle of having parking charges in local town centres

2019-01-04 Peckfield and Parlington Housing Plans Thrown Out by Inspectors

Two independent government-appointed inspectors have recommended that the Leeds Site Allocations Plan should be modified to exclude the major green belt sites at Peckfield and Parlington, Strong representations against the Peckfield site were made by Garforth Neighbourhood Planning Forum and local councillors. The inspectors have accepted the council’s approach to maximise the use of brownfield land, whilst minimising the release of greenfield and green belt land for development, The modifications will now be subject to Executive Board resolution ‪on 14th January.‬

2019-01-02 Bar Man Robs Pub

Casual bar worker Daniel James Bell hid the key of the Wheatsheaf pub in Sherburn and burgled it when the landlady was on holiday. He let himself in at 6am on 15th November and took £60 from a jar. His actions were caught on CCTV and he was recognised by the landlady on her return from holiday. Bell pleaded guilty to burglary and was given a 12 month community order and ordered to pay £386

2018-12-28 Two Rescued from Christmas Fire

Two people had to be rescued when fire broke out at a house in Long Meadow Gate, Garforth at around 3.30am on Christmas Day. It is believed the fire broke out in the kitchen. Fire Crews from Garforth and Killingbeck attended. The two occupants were treated for smoke inhalation by the ambulance service at the scene

Hillam Monk Fryston Cricket Club has secured a £60,000 grant from Biffa Award, part of the Landfill Communities Fund. The money will enable the existing cricket pavilion to be fully insulated. New doors, windows and a heating system will allow the pavilion to be used as an all year-round community facility. At the moment, the building and its environment is only useable in summer months.

Hillam Parish Council is setting up a Village Emergency Telephone System to support the use of the defibrillator - this is where local individuals volunteer to collect/deliver the defibrillator to the location it may be needed in the village. It is essential in defibrillation cases that the responder stays to deliver CPR and ensure oxygen is still pumping through the casualty's body instead of losing time collecting the defibrillator.

Sherburn High School has gratefully accepted over £300 worth of new books for its school library thanks to a magnanimous gesture from parent Rachel Parkes. Rachel, whose son James attends the school, entered a competition launched by Scholastic Book Clubs called James Patterson’s Big Book Giveaway and she won! Rachel had to say why she thought Sherburn High deserved to win so she told them how winning the books would raise student morale after a fire at the school had caused significant damage in July last year.

A power cut at the Elf Experience at Lotherton Hall on Saturday night caused the event to be evacuated after visitors to the woodland walk were left in darkness. The power cut was caused by a blown fuse following a downpour of rain. The event was back to normal the following day

When nine-year-old Jamie Broadbent won a brand new bike in his school’s summer raffle, the Ninelands Primary School pupil opted to use his £150 voucher, donated by Redrow Homes, to buy a bike for his younger brother Jonny, aged 3. The raffle was organised by the school’s parent teacher association, the Friends of Ninelands (FON) alongside the annual summer fair. The raffle and fair combined raised a total of £2,461, which will be used to improve outdoor spaces and enhance the school grounds.

2018-10-03 Virus Closes Fishery

Kippax Park fishery has been temporarily closed because of a confirmed outbreak by CEFAS (Centre for Environmental, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) of KHV (Koiherpesvirus), and an update will be issued when the situation alters. The disease can result in large-scale mortalities of up to 100 per cent among common carp and all varieties. There is no treatment, and any fish that survive become carriers of the disease in future years.

Members of the RMT Union have announced they will be striking again today in a row over Northern's plans for driver only trains. The 24 hour walkout is taking place from midnight with replacement buses organised for any affected routes on the network. Northern have said they will be operating 30 per cent of their normal timetable and services that do operate will run between 9am to 6pm.

On Saturday 1st September, twenty Oddfellow Arms Sherburn regulars took part in the Tour De Tap Room bike ride, in order to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The bikers set off from the pub at 6:30 am and after three stops en route, landed in Bridlington five hours later, their efforts having raised £4000. A further £1000 was raised in the evening from an auction by local auctioneer Malcolm Dowson.

Delays lasting several hours occurred on the A1 and M1 after a lorry left the motorway and ran up an embankment on the A1 at Bramham on Friday. A specialist crane had to be used to winch the lorry back onto the road surface.

After the devastating fire in July which caused significant damage to the Sherburn High PE Department, staff, students and the local community have been raising funds to replace lost PE equipment. A football match between Otley Town U16s and Sherburn White Rose U16s, many of whom are students of Sherburn High, has raised £1000 towards the PE Equipment Fund

North Yorkshire Police are noticing a rise in incidents of fraud where the victim is asked to pay an outstanding debt by means of i-tunes vouchers. The voucher numbers are then provided to the fraudster as means of payment. As a result Action Fraud is launching an awareness raising campaign. Please be aware, fraudsters will often use intimidation tactics to persuade the victim into paying the debt. Remember HMRC or similar organisations will never ask for payment in i-tune vouchers

On 12th August between the hours of 12:30pm and 3pm a grey oven was taken from the garden of a property on New Lane, Sherburn. North Yorkshire Police are appealing for any further witnesses of the incident or anyone who has any information to call 101 and quote reference 12180149784.

2018-08-15 Local MP Defends Universal Credit

The Minister for homelessness and rough sleeping, Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams, has sought to play down the impact that benefits changes may have had, despite a chorus of charities saying that the Government needs to address root causes. Mr Adams MP said it was too simplistic to blame one issue, Universal Credit, for rising numbers of people on the streets.

2018-08-13 Miners Continue on FA Cup Trail

An Albert Ibrahimi hat-trick and a goal from Niah Payne sealed a first FA Cup victory for the Miners for four years. The Miners delivered a lesson in finishing to the hosts who, it should be said, enjoyed good chances of their own but couldn't take them. A revenge match at Bridlington Town on 25th August awaits Garforth in the next round.

2018-08-10 More Rail Strikes Announced

The RMT union has announced a fresh series of 24-hour strikes, with the first planned for Saturday 25th August. Staff will also walk out for 24 hours on 1 September and 8 September, the Union announced. German-owned Northern Rail want to run nearly half a million trains a year without a safety critical guard on board in a move that would wreck both safety and access ‎to services according to RMT general secretary Mick Cash

2018-08-08 More Houses for Junction 45 Site

Templegate Developments have submitted plans to build an additional 700 homes on their Skelton Gate site immediately south west of Swillington. The site, east of junction 45 of the M1, already has planning permission for 1100 homes. Although the development is in Garforth and Swillington ward the land has been excluded from the Outer South East housing area by Leeds City Council and therefore does not count towards the housing targets for the Outer South East

2018-08-05 Unlucky Miners Kick Off with a Defeat

A dramatic last ten minutes saw Garforth cruelly defeated 2-1on the opening day of the season at Bridlington Town. Garforth dominated the game and should have had it wrapped up before Joe McFadyen struck the first of his two goals on 82 minutes. Devonte Morton continued his goalscoring run with an equaliser five minutes later, but McFadyen had the last say with a 90th minute winner

Former coal miners will be parading their banners and paraphernalia at a march at Lotherton Hall on Yorkshire Day 1st August. Central to the parade will be a Josh wedding, a 100 year old ceremony for supporting injured coal workers . Police shut the M1 Northbound carriageway between junctions 44 for Rothwell and 45 for Temple Newsam on Sunday afternoon and halted traffic due to concerns for a person seen on a motorway bridge. Burglars posing as workmen stole a box containing a local war hero’s lifetime of memories last Tuesday. 93 year old Robert Noble of Church Lane Garforth also lost £3,000 in cash when the bogus workman struck at his home.

Striker Curtly Martin-Wyatt has returned to Garforth Town FC. Curtly first played for The Miners back in October 2013 and scored on his debut, but is probably best known for a 23-goal haul in 2015-16 season which did much to maintain our Premier Division status.

2018-07-25 Soak It Up

Ninelands Primary pupils have taken part in Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Soak It Up project by planting trees, constructing a rain garden planter and a water butt planter to help reduce the impact of surface water. Flooding is a real issue in Garforth so the children are keen to learn about slowing the flow of water into the existing drainage system.

The operators of the police helicopter apologised to Garforth residents for the noise in the early hours of Sunday morning as they searched for two burglary suspects following a spate of burglary reports.

A new community cafe opened on Friday 13th July 2018 at Aberford Village Hall between 9am and 3pm. The cafe will be open on Fridays and will serve hot and cold drinks and homemade cakes. The community cafe is run by volunteers so if you’d like to get involved with baking or help with serving and tidying up, please do let one of the other volunteers know. 

2018-07-22 Crop Fire Call Out

A fire engine from Garforth was one of five engines called to a blaze covering 10 acres of crops and woodland in Rothwell on Friday morning. Water jets and beaters were used to tackle the fire. 

2018-07-22 Miners Season Tickets on Sale

Garforth Town season tickets for 2018-19 are now on sale, with a discount if buying before our first league game on Saturday 4th August. Prices are £75 for adults and £35 seniors/concessions (£100 and £50 respectively from 4th August). Concessions now include students, on production of valid student ID. These season ticket prices have been frozen for 4 years in a row. However the price at the turnstile will be £6 with concessions £3 and children free with a paying adult

Kippax was announced as winner of the best dressed village award for communities on the route of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire at a ceremony at the offices of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire. Sam Whitley from Garforth received the Spirit of the Tour award for her work in ensuring Garforth made the most of the event’s visit. The Osgoldcross and Elmet Rotary are supporting Sherburn Hungate Primary School with the renovation of their overgrown Wildlife Area, to create a usable space to help the children connect and learn about nature and animals. Clothes worn by 52 year old Garforth woman Denise Birdsall were found on a beach near Scarborough. Denise travelled to Scarborough on Monday morning and her clothes were found on the beach at Cayton Bay on Tuesday evening. She is being treated as a missing person

Lotherton Hall will celebrate Yorkshire day on 1st August with a community gala. The event will include stalls, live performances and a miners’ march with banners and brass bands. It takes place from 11am till 4pm. 

2018-07-18 Closed for Refurbishment

Monk Fryston Post Office and village store will be temporarily closed for refurbishment. The Post Office will close from 5.30pm on 30th July and the store will close from 7pm on 1st August. Both parts will reopen for business at 7am on Monday 13th August  

2018-07-18 Rail Strike Called Off

A planned strike in the long-running dispute over the role of guards on trains has been called off while talks take place between the Union and train operators. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union on Arriva Rail North were due to walk out for 24 hours on 21st July. The long-running dispute between Unite the union and Northern bosses revolves around guards on trains - a role which operators are looking to phase out. The latest reprieve follows months of disruption for Northern passengers, more recently blamed on a new timetable upset caused by delayed Network Rail works.

Grab your brightest attire and join Prince of Wales Hospice for their Starlight Walk this summer. Take on this 10k glow themed sponsored walk and help raise funds for your local Hospice. 2018-07-17 Back to Edwardian Britain

The two day Edwardian Times event at Lotherton Hall last weekend attracted around 5,000 visitors. The traditional sideshows, brass band, themed entertainment and period dress gave everyone a feel for life during the early 20th century

Due to unforeseen circumstances North Yorkshire Police’s Routes 4 You service on Saturday 28th July at Eversley Park, Sherburn in Elmet has been postponed. If anyone was hoping to speak with a member of NYP staff they can still be contacted on the 101 number or you can alternatively visit Sherburn Police Station to book an appointment. They will still be holding their Sherburn Library drop in on a regular basis for anyone who wishes to speak to a member of the team. 

2018-07-16 Trailer Theft

A 16ft metal Ifor Williams trailer bearing the reg FV65 0BX was stolen from a compound in Burton Salmon on the 6th July. The trailer is 6ft x 5ft and had a bright yellow pipe box and green plastic fuel bowzer on the rear. Serial No of the trailer is SCK60000010329766 and it had LDC marked on teh near side axel. Garforth Town FC been informed by the FA that their First Qualifying Round opponents Team Northumbria have resigned from the Northern League. Therefore the tie on Saturday 1st September is a walkover and the Miners progress to the second round of qualifying two weeks later when they will travel to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Sherburn High School year 11 students celebrated the end of high school life at the magnificent Hazelwood Castle on 28th June with a movie themed Prom Night party. Highlights of the evening included the long awaited Prom Awards with accolades ranging from ‘Best Bromance’ to ‘Clumsiest Person’ and of course the much coveted Prom King and Queen.

Between 9pm on 9th July and 4am on 10th July thieves broke the lock on the rear patio doors of a property on Pasture Avenue, Sherburn in Elmet to gain the keys to a VW Golf which was stolen and used in a burglary. 2018-07-12 Springwatch Presenter to Visit Ings

Television naturalist Chris Packham will be visiting Fairburn Ings on Thursday 19th July as part of his investigation into the threat to the nation’s wildlife. Fairburn Ings is one of 50 sites being visited by Mr Packham and his Bioblitz team.

Big hearted staff at Dominos in Garforth invited 3 year old Ada Butterfield to a morning of pizza making topped off by a £400 donation to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. Little Ada suffers from biliary atresia which may require her to have a liver transplant at some point in the future.

Garforth Town travel to Team Northumbria for an FA Vase First Qualifying Round tie on Saturday 1st September (kick-off 3pm). Should they return down the A1 with a win, they would make the journey to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion in the next round.

2018-07-08 Suspicious Vehicle Warning

Farms and businesses in the rural Selby area are being thanked for their vigilance and urged to tighten up their security, after a suspicious vehicle was sighted in the area. The police believe the vehicle is on cloned plates. Any sightings of a suspicious white transit van should be reported to North Yorkshire Police immediately, giving the direction of travel. 

2018-07-07 Train Services Getting Worse

A report from the Office for Road and Rail has produced statistics for the year ending 31st March showing that less than two thirds of trains run by Northern arrived on time. TransPennine Express was even worse with less than half of of trains arriving on time. The collapsed Virgin Trains East Coast service also had less than half of its trains arriving on time. 

2018-07-07 Girl Arrested Over Sherburn School Fire

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fire at a secondary school which badly damaged its gym and changing rooms. North Yorkshire Police said the girl was arrested on Tuesday and had been released while inquires continued. The school, which had been closed since Monday, has now re-opened.

2018-07-05 Villans Fund New Defibrillator

Garforth Villa Junior football club have raised the money to fund a community defibrillator, along with help from resident Caroline Walker in memory of her husband Keith. The defibrillator will be installed at Garforth Working Men’s Club. Villa hope to install another machine in the East Garforth area in memory of referee Albert Birch.  

2018-07-04 Police Give Warm Weather Warning

North Yorkshire Police have been giving residents a warm weather warning. There have been two recent burglaries in Selby District where suspects have gained entry via open/insecure windows and doors. This is easily done when the weather has been so hot. Please therefore remember to lock windows and doors on the ground floor and if possible make use of safety catches on any upper floors. Please also remember to keep your doors locked if you are in the garden as this poses an ideal opportunity for sneak-in burglars. 

2018-07-04 Major Fire at Sherburn High School

Dozens of firefighters were called out to Sherburn High School just before midnight on Monday. The gymnasium and changing block have been damaged but no-one was in the building at the time. North Yorkshire Police said it launched a full inquiry and was checking forensic analysis and CCTV. Officers investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire now believe the origin of the fire is suspicious. Hillam Parish Council has received a set of plans for re-consultation prior to the August Selby Council Planning Meeting. Plans will be available at the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 4th July, 7.30 at the Community Centre, Monk Fryston. Thomas Wheelhouse and Zachary Brabbs of Kippax Greenfield Primary School were amongst the winners of the Design a Flowerbed award at the annual Leeds in Bloom awards at the Civic Hall. They took home an art set and a holdall and earned their school a £300 voucher to spend at the Arium plant nursery

The list of Leeds Health Walks for July and August is now available. Follow the link in the right-hand column for details. All walks will be easy-going and approximately 3.5 to 4 miles in length, unless otherwise stated. Some may include off-road walking and involve the use of stiles. 2018-06-29 No South Milford Bonfire in 2018

South Milford Bonfire Committee has announced that the South Milford bonfire and firework display will not take place in 2018. The event has run for 25 years and raised £325,000 for local community groups. They hope to run the event again in 2019

Firefighter Stephen Bartle, who is based at Garforth fire station was awarded the Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for 20 years’ service at a ceremony at the service’s HQ at Birkenshaw last weekend

2018-06-26 New First Team Coach Joins The Miners

Garforth Town manager Rob Hunter has strengthened his back-room team with the appointment of former Ayr United winger Michael Reynolds who has joined the club as first team coach for the 2018-19 season. Michael has been involved at near neighbours Harrogate Railway. He brings with him a wealth of experience and is currently working his way through his coaching badges.

Garforth Academy’s Junior and Senior girls Athletics teams have qualified for the Leeds Schools Athletics Finals at South Leeds Stadium. The finals take place on Tuesday 26th June 2018, starting at 4pm. The boys teams narrowly missed out on qualification for the finals this year

Byram fish and chip shop has been broken into for the second time this year. A collection box for Brotherton Bulldogs was taken from behind the counter. A substantial reward is offered for any information regarding this incident.
