2024-03-26 Collision Closes Road

Emergency services responded to a serious two-vehicle head-on collision on Astley Lane near Swillington at the weekend. The incident caused a complete closure of the road between Allerton Bywater and Swillington, close to the entrance of St. Aidens nature reserve.

2024-03-25 Post Office Closure

Following the armed raid on Monk Fryston Post Office on 19th February the couple who run the business, Karen and Adrian Bullock, have decided to close the post office counter on safety grounds. They will run the village stores as usual, but the post office will shut on Friday 7th June.

2024-03-24 Bronson Comes Good

Kate Challinor from Kippax is a tattooist running a charity that covers mastectomy scars with floral designs. Charles Bronson, 71, known as the UK's most notorious prisoner, has created a drawing with ink and pencil for Kate to sell, to raise funds for the charity. Bronson made a splash in the art world after he took up art in Wakefield Prison. The Inkredible Foundation is holding a bidding an auction, open to the general public to sell Bronson's work.

Rex Ripley from Garforth, who sadly died in February aged 93 is the man who designed the iconic Yorkshire Television Chevron design that announced its programmes. 

2024-03-23 Mr Makin Guilty of Assault

Chris Makin, 65, denied assaulting Andrew Mason, 63, by beating during an altercation on Busk Lane in Church Fenton, near Tadcaster, last April. The businessman was found guilty after a trial at Harrogate Magistrates Court. Sentencing will take place on 23rd April.

The Garforth, Swillington, Kippax, Methley and Villages Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be holding regular community contact points at Garforth Police Station, Lidgett Lane, Garforth LS25 1LJ. Garforth led a scrappy weekend home game 1-0 at half time through a Matt Antcliff goal, but a flurry of goals after he break stunned Maltby Main. Antcliff grabbed a second, Sam Barker got a hat trick, Jordan Emery a brace and Jay Davis weighed in with one for an 8-0 victory.

Co-op launched a new-look and improved store on Thursday 29 February to serve the community of Sherburn. Opening between 06am-10pm daily, the new store includes a free ATM to provide access to cash in the community, in-store bakery, hot food, soft plastic recycling point, used batteries recycling point and a Costa Coffee Express machine.

2024-03-13 Fatal Collision on A63

An accident happened just after 5pm on the A63 near South Milford on Tuesday 5 March involving a red Citreon C1 and a Mini Cooper. The 89-year-old driver of the Citroen was taken to hospital where he sadly died. His 77-year-old passenger was also taken to hospital where she remains with serious injuries. 2024-03-12 Plan for Power Station Site

Up to 2,500 jobs could be created if plans to redevelop an old power station site are approved. Wakefield Council planning officers have recommended backing the proposal to transform the Ferrybridge C power station site in Knottingley into a major industrial and employment zone. Councillors will vote on the plans at a meeting on Thursday.

Police say they have arrested a man in his 40s in Hertfordshire in connection with a robbery at a post office in Monk Fryston near Selby at about 4.40pm on Monday, 19th February.

2024-03-11 Miners Lose Away

Garforth almost clutched a draw from the jaws of a 3-2 defeat, but Golcar held out for the win on a freezing Friday night in Huddersfield. The home side came flying out of the blocks and led 2-0 at the break. When a neat left footed free kick made it three, it seemed to be contest over, but Town rallied late on, scoring twice, to set up a thrilling finish to the match.

2024-03-09 Police Arrest Boy Driver

Police stopped a BMW X5 towing a suspected stolen caravan on the M1 southbound near Garforth on Thursday and were staggered to find an 11-year-old child at the wheel. A search of the car also revealed equipment typically used by suspects to carry out thefts and a selection of vehicle registration plates. The boy was arrested on suspicion of offences including theft, burglary, going equipped for theft, and motoring offences including dangerous driving.

2024-03-06 Miners Win Again

Garforth made it six wins on the bounce as they overcame a tricky away match at Goole at the weekend. Sam Barker opened the scoring in first half stoppage time. Substitute Matt Antcliff scored a magnificent goal in the second period, before Charlie Marshall sealed the 3-0 victory by chipping the keeper.

2024-03-05 Post Office Robbery

Two men committed a robbery at a post office in Monk Fryston at about 4.40pm on Monday, 19th February. Staff were pushed to ground during the robbery and one was taken to hospital for checks. The men fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white van. Police said that a man in his 30s was arrested in Nottinghamshire in connection with the investigation. He was released with no further action following questioning by police. The investigation continues.

2024-02-29 Operation Decrease Update Meeting

Operation Decrease is a North Yorkshire Police initiative set up to tackle the increase in domestic 2 in 1 burglary in Sherburn and surrounding villages in recent months. There will be a meeting on 12th March 2024 between 6pm and 7pm at the Lady Popplewell Centre, Beechwood Glade, Sherburn will inform residents what impact Operation Decrease has had, what positive results have been achieved and if we have indeed managed to decrease the number of domestic burglaries.

2024-02-27 Theft from Railway Compound

Detectives are investigating the theft of plant equipment from Garforth railway station on 18th January. A man entered a compound at the station just before 10.30am and gained entry to a container, taking over ?3,000 worth of equipment and loading it into his car before leaving the compound.

A Barkway brace wrapped up a 4th successive victory for Garforth Town on Saturday when they beat a struggling Goole AFC at the Bannister Prentice stadium. 

2024-02-25 Bin that Glass

Leeds residents will soon be able to use their green bins to recycle glass, the city council has announced. It is estimated Leeds residents currently put 11,400 tonnes of glass in their black bins each year. 

2024-02-25 Motorway Repairs Starting in March

Major safety improvements will get under way on the M1 in West Yorkshire in March, with a 10-mile stretch of central barrier being upgraded. The scheme is divided into two projects. The first involves junction 46 to Junction 47. It will start in March and is expected to last around seven months. A second section between junctions 43 and 45 will begin in August and is likely to take nine months. During this work the M1 will be reduced from three to two lanes, 24 hours a day. A reduced speed limit will be in place.

2024-02-23 Burglar Jailed

Career criminal Arron Lally caught a cab with an accomplice to Garforth where they burgled one house and targeted two more. The 29-year-old ordered the taxi just after midnight on11th December last year. They went to two properties on Strawberry Avenue and Witham Way but failed to break in, then eventually got into a home on Kennet Way, taking goods and a car. Lally has 16 previous convictions for burglaries and thefts. Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, he was jailed for five years and three months.

2024-02-22 Bungalow Fire

A blaze, at a bungalow on Hall Park Meadows, in Kippax, was reported shortly before 6pm on 19th February. Three fire engines - from Garforth, Killingbeck and Pontefract - were sent to the scene. They used breathing apparatus and put out the fire with hose reel jets. An elderly man was taken to hospital after being rescued.

Kippax Kicks is welcoming new members at Kippax Leisure Centre every Monday. Sessions are every Monday 4.45-5.45pm for age 10-13yrs and 5.45-6.45pm for age 14-18yrs. Funded by the local ward Councillors via Leeds City Council Outer East Community Committee.  

2024-02-21 Armed Police in Micklefield

Armed police officers rushed to Micklefield after a disturbance on Sunday 18th February, which involved an attempted break-in at a house. Officers rushed to the scene at Garden Village, where they were told that suspects had attempted to force entry to a property. Armed police were deployed, but the suspects fled the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.

2024-02-20 Miners Win Again

Garforth made it two wins in the space of 4 days with a big performance to secure all 3 points away to Silsden AFC at the weekend. An impressive first half performance saw the Miners head in 2-0 up at the break with goals from Charlie Marshall and Rinor Ejupi being the difference. A late goal for Silsden caused a few anxious moments but the Miners hung on for a good 2-1 win.

Micklefield Parish Council have awarded a ?2592 grant to St Mary?s Church for Yard Maintenance. This will go towards cutting the grass around grave areas every two weeks, and other wider areas during the growing months. The money will also used in the cost of reinstating the path adjacent to the boundary with the old vicarage.

2024-02-11 Traveller Family Blocked from Allotment

Permission for a traveller family to continue living on an allotment site on Sandgate Terrace in Kippax has been blocked despite advice that it would be in the best interests of the children. Councillors rejected a recommendation from planning officers to grant a temporary three-year permission for caravans to remain on the site at Sandgate Stables. A final decision on the application will now be brought back to a future plans panel meeting. 

2024-02-10 Inquest into Motorcyclist?s Death

An inquest into motorcycle enthusiast and former soldier Richard Adam Gee?s death at Northallerton Coroner?s Court heard this week that the 39-year-old, of South Elmsall, was killed in 2021 after a crash on the A1246 near the RSPB Fairburn Ings nature reserve.

An air ambulance landed at the scene of a Leeds crash after a car reportedly smashed into a tree on the A642 near the junction of Wakefield Road and Whitehouse Lane, in Swillington, on Monday. Emergency crews attended the scene. The road was cleared and reopened.

A depleted Garforth Town suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Barton Town at the weekend. Kippax War Memorial has been restored to its former glory. Local councillors, the Parish Council and Kippax Royal British Legion have jointly funded a steam clean of the stonework, as well as re-bronzing four named plaques and re-enamelling letters. The memorial was erected in the village's Garden of Remembrance in 1921. 

2024-01-18 Van Pursuit

On Monday evening police officers were patrolling Micklefield when a van, travelling at over 40mph in a 30mph late at night caught their eye. The driver didn't want to stop and following a short pursuit hot-footed it across 3 lanes of the motorway network, narrowly missed by a HGV. The van was stolen from South Yorkshire, displaying false plates, and will shortly be reunited with its owner.

2023-12-27 Owner Fined After Dog Attacks Woman

A large German Shepherd was able to get free after the latch had not been put on the front gate to the property on Highfield Road in Aberford, attacking the woman who was walking by with her husband and their own pet dog. At Leeds Crown Court Judge Stubbs accepted it was an isolated incident after years of trouble-free dog keeping. He fined him ?100 and told him to pay the victim ?1,500 compensation. He made the dog subject to a contingent destruction order.

Over the last three months the police in the Garforth, Kippax, Swillington, Methley and villages area have arrested ten drivers for drink driving, two for drug driving, two for driving while disqualified and one for possession of an offensive weapon. 2023-11-26 Wanted Man

Police are searching for a convicted Leeds burglar who they want to send back to prison. Jonathan Frosdick, of Seacroft, was released from prison in September after serving part of a sentence for burglary. The 29-year-old is now a wanted man as he is believed to have breached the terms of his release. He is thought to have links to the Swarcliffe, Seacroft and Kippax areas of the city.

2023-11-21 Early Morning Car Crash

A man was rescued from a vehicle after it flipped on its side in a crash in Barnsdale Road, Allerton Bywater, at 4.34am on Saturday, 18th November. He was rushed to hospital where his injuries were found to be non life-threatening. A second man, who had managed to escape the vehicle, was also taken to hospital. His injuries were deemed not serious.

Two drug dealers have been sentenced after they were caught at Leeds Festival by a huge police operation that saw 56 arrests for drug offences. Both were sentenced to 45 months in a young offenders? institution. They are the fifth and sixth drug dealers to have been sentenced after being arrested at this year?s Leeds Festival.

The 22-year-old was raised by his grandparents in Micklefield after his mother tragically passed away.

There will be a firework display at the Cricket Club in Stocking Lane, Hillam on Saturday 4th November. Tickets are ?6 and ?3 for children, available at the post office. Gates open at 5.15pm and the display starts at 7.15pm. This is a ticket only event.

2023-10-23 Crash in Roe Lane

Three people were taken to hospital by ambulance after a serious crash in Roe Lane near Hillam at around 8.30pm on Monday 16th October. Firefighters cut off the roof of a grey Seat Ibiza in order the free the occupants. North Yorkshire Police is now appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage.

2023-09-25 Fatal Collision on A63

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal collision which happened on the A63 between Monk Fryston and Hambleton at approximately 2.45pm on Wednesday 20 September 2023. A bus which was travelling westbound towards Monk Fryston was in collision with a red Suzuki Swift which was travelling eastbound towards Hambleton. Sadly, the driver of the Suzuki, a 55-year-old woman died at the scene. Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to call 101 and ask for Mike Halstead.

Three teenagers have been taken to hospital following a hammer attack in Garforth which took place on Main Street at around 2.30pm on Sunday, 3rd September. The victims, aged 14, 15 and 16, had got off a bus shortly before they were assaulted by four men. 2023-08-28 Miners Exit FA Vase

The Miners were beaten 3-1 by West Allotment Celtic in the Isuzu FA Vase on Saturday. Matt Antcliff gave Garforth the lead midway through the first half, but the visitors equalised two minutes into added time. Celtic extended their lead in the second half, forcing Garforth to throw on subs and put Harry Viggars up front in search of a late leveller, but the Miners were caught on the break and punished again deep into stoppage time.

A vehicle fire on M1 Southbound from J47 A656 (Garforth / Micklefield) to J46 A6120 William Parkin Way (Leeds Colton / Garforth) closed two lanes on Thursday. An eyewitness reported a small white van had caught fire.

Ross Trutch, a director of Aztech Building and Maintenance Limited has been fined at York Magistrates? Court after installing substandard fire doors. North Yorkshire Council Trading Standards Services began an investigation after receiving a complaint from a Sherburn-in-Elmet couple who had contracted the company to undertake a loft conversion. He was fined ?1,000 and ordered to pay compensation to the householders of ?4,416, costs of ?813 and a victim surcharge during a hearing before magistrates

2023-08-16 Crash in Sherburn

Four people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Sherburn-in-Elmet at about 2pm on Sunday. The crash took place on Sir John?s Lane and involved a black Volkswagen Polo and a silver Land Rover Discovery. Both vehicles were travelling in the opposite direction. Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to call 101, select option 2 and ask for Richard Ellis.

National Youth Theatre are staging a series of performances against the stunning backdrop of RSPB St Aidan's Nature Park. Follow a cast of over 100 performers on a quest through the site, exploring it across several beautiful locations as it is spectacularly animated with music, movement and projection like never before. West Yorkshire police have received reports of 2 thefts from vehicles early hours of 2nd August where a suspect has been seen trying car door handles.
