Kippax Parish Council have announced that the grumpy old man from the movie UP by 2 Lyndale was the winner of the 2026 Kippax Scarecrow competition. Well done and congratulations to all entrants.

Kippax Scooter Club are holding a Multimeet at Kippax Welfare Sports and Social Club on Sunday 28th June from 12.30pm. Trophies awarded for 5 classes. 

2026-06-22 New Benches

Kippax Parish Council are proposing to purchase 2 more benches to go alongside the new path on Kippax Common. These benches purchased from and installed by LCC cost ?2000 each. Local Ward Councillors have provided funds for one bench. If anyone want to fund the second one as a memorial bench, Kippax Parish Council will fund and organise a plaque to go on the bench.

If anyone fancies giving crown green bowling a go please come visit us at one of their home games or on a Friday night to find out more. All equipment will be provided and hot and cold refreshments are available (maybe even a cheeky ice cream if you?re lucky). Everyone welcome.

Garforth Tigers Under 14s are in need of new players. Training is Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7 at Glebelands. First few training sessions will be free until your child signs up so you can get a feel for it first.

West Yorkshire Police have issued a warning saying that due to a small rise in you should make sure your security around your property is up to date. Over the las few weeks there has been a few burglaries that have mainly been aimed at high value/performance cars. If you have a keyless car then please put the keys in a security pouch. The police have increased their patrols and will continue to do so.

2026-06-17 Water Safety

PCSO Simpson visited Micklefield Church of England Primary School on Tuesday to talk about Water Safety. Sessions were delivered to Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The pupils engaged and understood the dangers of going into open water. Lots of fantastic questions were asked and answered.

2026-06-14 Feeding Britain Survey

Kippax Community Pantry is participating in a second Feeding Britain Survey. All existing pantry members can take part and for every survey completed they will get a free visit to the food bank side of the pantry worth ?5 . Surveys can be filled in online using the QR code on the poster or collect a printed copy when you next visit the pantry. This survey is open now until 18t July

There is a charity Car Wash at Garforth Fire Station on Saturday 27th June from 10am to 2pm. All money raised will go to the firefighters charity, they will accept cash and card on the day, there will also be a QR code available. 

2026-06-13 Helping Hands

Kippax Ward Councillors James Lewis and Michael Millar provided ?1500 of funding towards the cost of this year?s Kippax gala. Kippax Parish Council volunteers also raised ?277 for Kippax Community Pantry at the Gala.

There is a Charity Darts Tournament at Bowers Allerton Hall on Saturday 13th June from 2pm. 

2026-06-12 Funding for High Street

Sherburn is set for a fresh programme of markets, events and public space improvements after securing ?41,976 through the Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund. The funding will support a new High Street regeneration project designed to increase footfall, support local businesses and create a more welcoming town centre for residents and visitors.

There will be an Early Years Brigshaw Beginnings Event at Brigshaw High School Sports Hall on Friday 10th July from 4pm to 6pm. This event is for children and parents who are joining one of their nursery or reception classes this September. 

2026-06-11 Motorcyclist Killed in Collision

A motorcyclist has died after a crash in Sherburn in Elmet. The crash happened at 7.55pm on Saturday June 6, 2026 on Sir John?s Lane and involved a silver Suzuki motorcycle and a blue Mazda vehicle. The rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers from North Yorkshire Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the collision, has any relevant dashcam footage, or who may have seen either vehicle prior to the incident, to come forward.

Mary Holmes is a local author and female activist. She will be giving a talk about Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy at Garforth Country Club on 22nd June at 7.30pm. It is an open meeting organised by Soroptimist International of Garforth Elmet and all are welcome.

St Mary?s Youth Theatre will be performing School of Rock - the Musical at Garforth Miners Welfare Hall on Thursday 11th June to Saturday 13th June. There will be a matinee on Saturday at 3pm. In partnership with Leeds Council, Good Egg Safety are running FREE child car seat checking events across West Yorkshire during 2026. Two thirds of child seats checked across the UK are fitted incorrectly. It only takes 5 minutes to get your car seat checked. So come along to Lotherton Hall on Friday 14th August from 10am to 3pm for a quick and easy check of your child's car seat for total peace of mind that they're sitting safely.

Garforth Town?s new kit for next season has been launched and shirts can be pre-ordered from today. Available in a range of adult and junior sizes, from ?35 to ?45. Northern services between Leeds and York via Garforth will be affected on weekends from Saturday 6 June until Sunday 21 June because of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. This will affect stations including Leeds, Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth, Micklefield, Church Fenton, Ulleskelf and York.

Data from the Leeds Weather Station shows that it reached a maximum temperature of 33.1C on Bank Holiday Monday. It was recorded at 4.50pm with the coldest part of the day being at 5.20am when it was 12.1C.

The Welsh T Band return to the Commercial Inn, Kippax on Saturday 30th May at 9pm. 

2026-05-27 Earthquake

Residents in Bramham, a few miles from Wetherby, might have noticed the tremor on Thursday (21st May) night. The British Geological Survey (BGS) has confirmed that the 1.2 magnitude quake hit the village at around 10.44pm on that date. It was a relatively deep seismic event, with the BGS recording a depth of 27km for the tremor near Leeds.

The result of the 2026 election for Garforth and Swillington ward was a victory for sitting Councillor Mark Dobson for Garforth and Swillington Independents with 5,007 votes followed by David Butterfield for Reform on 1, 582 votes. Turnout was 48.8 percent.

The result of the 2026 election for Kippax and Methley ward was a victory for sitting Councillor Mary Harland for Labour with 3,336 votes followed by Christopher Weightman for Reform on 3,038 votes. Turnout was 44.4 percent.

2026-05-05 Peckfield Mining Disaster

Thursday April 30th was the 130th anniversary of the Peckfield Mining Disaster. There was a memorial in St Mary the Virgin, Micklefield churchyard where many of the victims are buried. There was also a Said Eucharist on Wednesday 29th April at 9.30am for the 63 victims.

A fascinating new documentary by Norde Polar Films, called For the Love of the Game, is available on YouTube. It follows the behind the scenes work at Garforth Town, a non-league football club 7 leagues below the Premiere League.

A dramatic final day full of twists and turns ended with relegation for Blyth Town. Owen Marshall scored for Garforth after just two minutes. Cameron Gascoigne restored parity to keep it level at half time. Garforth subs Luke Aldrich and Daniel Ramsden netted late on. Adam Johnsons? added time goal made it briefly interesting, before Steven Jeff compounded Blyths? fate with a goal just before the final whistle. Garforth finished ninth in the league with 55 points.

A new registration scheme designed to improve access to North Yorkshire?s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) and ensure the service is used fairly by residents will go live later this month. From Monday, 27th April, residents will need to register their name, address and vehicle before visiting any of the county?s 20 HWRCs. Registration is free, takes a couple of minutes, and lasts for three years.

Author Caroline Jones, originally from Kippax but now living in Australia has written a fantasy novel called The Billywoods Chronicles: The Panacea. 2026-04-07 Garforth Feastival Cancelled for Ever

Another of Garforth?s annual community events has disappeared. This year?s Feastival has been cancelled after the General Manager of Scott Hall and Garforth Leisure Centres overturned the decision to allow Feastival to proceed during the Leisure Centre?s opening hours. Without a venue, Feastival organisers feel they can no longer provide this free event going forward. This cancellation follows on from the disappearance of the annual community Bonfire and Firework Display.

2026-03-17 Gun Incident in Garforth

On Sunday evening police were called to reports of men fighting in Kennet Lane, Garforth. Officers, including armed response, attended after a gun was reported. A search of a vehicle at the scene recovered what turned out to be a BB gun. One man was arrested on suspicion of assault. Further checks led to a second man being arrested. Both are in custody as Leeds CID continue their investigation.

Garforth Town picked up their second home win in a week on Saturday with a well-deserved victory over Bradford Park Avenue. Owen Marshall capitalised when goalkeeper Campbell could only palm a header into his path on eleven minutes. Adam Haw equalised with his first chance of the match on twenty-six minutes to level it up going into the break. A Charlie Marshall double put the Miners into an unassailable lead, which rarely looked threatened.

A man was left with a fractured spine after angry thug Dale Day, 28, turned on him near Garforth railway station. The man tried to intervene when Dale Day was damaging fences on Aberford Road. Day kicked and punched the man repeatedly, before trying to push him into oncoming traffic, Leeds Crown Court heard. He was jailed for 30 months.

Seven young students from Stagecoach Performing Arts Garforth and Wetherby have appeared in the latest series of Channel 5?s Animal Care Club, filmed at locations across Yorkshire. The children were selected to take part after submitting headshots and self-tapes, and went on to help care for pets, farm animals, wildlife and zoo animals. The successful students, aged 7-9 and from Garforth, Micklefield, Rothwell, Methley and Wetherby, assisted vets and animal carers at sanctuaries, wildlife centres and farms across the region learning first-hand how to care for animals while being part of a national TV production.

An inquest has been opened for a Sherburn sixth-form student who died in a crash between a car driven by a Leeds woman and a minibus carrying nine teenagers. Eleanor Hague, 16, died in the collision involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a Hyundai i10 car on Toulston Lane in Tadcaster on 1st December.

After a first half stalemate on Saturday, an incredible second half saw Garforth fall behind to Ashington in the fifty third minute, before Luke Aldrich restored parity with a goal three minutes later. 2025-11-11 Fruit Picker Accommodation Extension

Makins in Micklefield wants to continue using 84 static caravans at its Sturton Grange strawberry farm near Garforth. The company was first granted time-limited permission in 2009 to house mainly European fruit pickers who arrive in the UK under the Seasonal Worker visa scheme. The plans for the soft fruit farm to house up to 325 seasonal workers will go before a panel of councillors. If granted, a current planning application would allow use of the caravans for another six years at the Ridge Road farm.

Parents and carers with children due to start primary school in North Yorkshire in September next year can apply for their places now. Primary applications for children born between September 1, 2021, and August 31, 2022, must be submitted by January 15, 2026, and it is advised to list up to five schools in order of preference.

Garforth stunned in-form Dunston with an excellent all-round performance, capped with some stunning strikes. Matt Savage put the Miners in front midway through the first half with a stunning volley from the edge of the box. Dan Coupland calmly doubled the lead from the spot after Rinor Ejupi had been upended in the box. Luke Aldrich then wrapped up the points with a clinical first time shot.

2025-11-06 Plane Crash at Sherburn Airport

A man in his 70s from the Leeds area has died in a plane crash involving a light aircraft at Sherburn Aero Club near Sherburn in Elmet just after 1pm on Sunday. The accident happened as the small plane landed on the runway. Police are currently guarding the scene and the Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.

2025-11-05 Garforth Man Charged with Murder

Detectives investigating an altercation in Garforth in which a man died have charged a man with murder. Thomas Childe, 23, of Oak Crescent, Garforth, who defines as White British, has been remanded in custody to appear before Leeds magistrates on Tuesday 4th November.

2025-11-04 Second Man Arrested in Murder Enquiry

A 23-year-old Leeds man is currently in custody on suspicion of murder after being arrested in the local Garforth area on Friday, as part of continuing enquiries by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. The victim has been identified as Mr Colin Starbuck, aged 79, from Garforth. The police are appealing for witnesses.

Emergency services tackled a fire at the Co-op on Main Street Garforth on Friday. The fire occurred around 3pm and involved an electrical fridge freezer unit on the ground floor of the supermarket. Five appliances attended the fire. No casualties were reported.

A 79-year-old man was attacked in Aberford Road, Garforth, at 6.35pm on Wednesday, 29th October. He died later in hospital. An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

2025-10-20 Plans for Recycling Centres

Proposals to revise the use of recycling centres to North Yorkshire residents to generate savings and improve access are set to be considered by councillors. Under new plans, owners of commercial-like vehicles would also be allowed up to 12 free visits a year to dispose of their own household waste at the county?s 20 recycling centres. If introduced, it is estimated to generate savings of up to ?405,000 per year and will improve access due to fewer visitors.

2025-10-18 Restart a Heart Training

A group of people representing Yorkshire Ambulance Service, including Community Responders, Nurses and non clinical staff, were joined by Red Watch from Garforth Fire Station to help deliver CPR training to all year 8s at Garforth Academy. In total they trained around 285 students.
