Join us at RSPB St Aidans on Wednesday 26th August for our monthly Wellbeing Wander. Take a gentle stroll accompanied by our volunteer rangers. No more than a mile and lasts about an hour. Please meet outside the Little Owl Cafe for 11am. It is a free event and everyone is welcome.

2026-08-22 Grimsby Borough 3-3 Garforth Town

Garforth pulled off an incredible fightback on Wednesday evening, after finding themselves 3-0 down just twenty-seven minutes into this encounter. Jamie Barkway started the fightback just three minutes later. Garforth took the game to Grimsby late on and finally got level when substitutes James Burgess and Mutty both scored minutes after taking to the field.

Bowers Allerton Hall are holding their annual summer fair on Sunday September 27th. They are looking for groups to perform through the day for their guests to aid their regeneration fundraising efforts. In the past they have had Bhangra dancers, ukelele groups, wind bands, choirs, dance troupes, cheer leaders and much more.

It was FA Cup Day on Saturday at Garforth Town FC. The first half witnessed a scene familiar to home fans from last year where Town, favourites on paper, lacked the incisiveness to cut through a well-drilled opponent. The Miners went behind in the first half when Max Leonard lifted the ball over Flatters to give the Midland League side a shock lead. On 68 mins Garforth had the equaliser. Patrick's corner kick found Charlie Marshall at the back post who bundled in. The replay is on Tuesday kick off 7.45pm

Hay bales and hedges were reportedly on fire between Sherburn and South Milford on Friday. Fire engines were called to the scene.

A row of temporary traffic lights has been installed directly outside Bengal Cottage in Micklefield. The new layout has sparked massive headaches for both the business and its patrons, completely upending the local parking situation. A public consultation Is expected to launch in August and run for five weeks. The proposed station would be built on the Leeds?York railway line between Cross Gates and Garforth, serving the growing Thorpe Park development and providing a new rail link for East Leeds.

2026-07-25 Garforth Town 0-1 Guiseley AFC

Garforth fell to a narrow defeat on Tuesday evening but had a good workout against a side from the division above and got more pre-season minutes under their belts. The Miners fell behind in the first half but could have gone in level at the break if a Luke Aldrich penalty hadn't clipped the bar. Both sides made plenty of changes after the break and Town were unfortunate not to equalise right on the stroke of full time.

2026-07-21 Grant for Garforth Brass

Garforth Brass set up a dedicated training band ten years ago to help tackle a gradual decline in numbers that has followed from musical education becoming less of a priority in the school system, with free instrument loans and tuition provided to people of all ages. A ?1,000 grant from the community benefits fund linked to the Hook Moor Wind Farm has now covered the cost of hiring the room in which the training band practices every Wednesday evening for a full year.

2026-07-04 Motorcyclist Dies on A1

Police are appealing for witnesses and footage following a crash on the A1. It happened just before 5.30am on Friday 3rd July between Junctions 42 Selby Fork and 43 Hook Moor on the A1 northbound and involved a grey Suzuki motorcycle. Police are appealing for witnesses and footage. The rider, a 58-year-old man, was found on the grass verge a short time after the bike had been reported to police by a concerned passing motorist. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

2026-06-11 Motorcyclist Killed in Collision

A motorcyclist has died after a crash in Sherburn in Elmet. The crash happened at 7.55pm on Saturday June 6, 2026 on Sir John?s Lane and involved a silver Suzuki motorcycle and a blue Mazda vehicle. The rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers from North Yorkshire Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the collision, has any relevant dashcam footage, or who may have seen either vehicle prior to the incident, to come forward.

Residents in Bramham, a few miles from Wetherby, might have noticed the tremor on Thursday (21st May) night. The British Geological Survey (BGS) has confirmed that the 1.2 magnitude quake hit the village at around 10.44pm on that date. It was a relatively deep seismic event, with the BGS recording a depth of 27km for the tremor near Leeds.

The result of the 2026 election for Garforth and Swillington ward was a victory for sitting Councillor Mark Dobson for Garforth and Swillington Independents with 5,007 votes followed by David Butterfield for Reform on 1, 582 votes. Turnout was 48.8 percent.

The result of the 2026 election for Kippax and Methley ward was a victory for sitting Councillor Mary Harland for Labour with 3,336 votes followed by Christopher Weightman for Reform on 3,038 votes. Turnout was 44.4 percent.

Thursday April 30th was the 130th anniversary of the Peckfield Mining Disaster. There was a memorial in St Mary the Virgin, Micklefield churchyard where many of the victims are buried. There was also a Said Eucharist on Wednesday 29th April at 9.30am for the 63 victims.

Sherburn in Elmet Town Council has successfully secured ?41,976 from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (Y&NYCA)?s Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund. A dramatic final day full of twists and turns ended with relegation for Blyth Town. Owen Marshall scored for Garforth after just two minutes. Cameron Gascoigne restored parity to keep it level at half time. Garforth subs Luke Aldrich and Daniel Ramsden netted late on. Adam Johnsons? added time goal made it briefly interesting, before Steven Jeff compounded Blyths? fate with a goal just before the final whistle. Garforth finished ninth in the league with 55 points.

A new registration scheme designed to improve access to North Yorkshire?s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) and ensure the service is used fairly by residents will go live later this month. From Monday, 27th April, residents will need to register their name, address and vehicle before visiting any of the county?s 20 HWRCs. Registration is free, takes a couple of minutes, and lasts for three years.

Grants are available from Hook Moor Windfarm Community Fund. This is for grants that benefit the people of Micklefield and Aberford there is over ?20.000 in the fund as it is under subscribed (not enough people/groups applying). Author Caroline Jones, originally from Kippax but now living in Australia has written a fantasy novel called The Billywoods Chronicles: The Panacea. It is inspired by the Billywoods, Townclose Hills nature reserve, where she used to play as a young child. The book, published by Hawkeye Publishing, will be available from 17th May.

Garforth suffered a third 1-0 defeat in a row in their Easter Monday derby in front of a crowd of over 600. A second half header was enough to win it. Rinor Ejupi almost snatched an equaliser in the 90th minute, only to see his fierce free kick tipped over the bar.

2026-04-07 Garforth Feastival Cancelled for Ever

Another of Garforth?s annual community events has disappeared. This year?s Feastival has been cancelled after the General Manager of Scott Hall and Garforth Leisure Centres overturned the decision to allow Feastival to proceed during the Leisure Centre?s opening hours. Without a venue, Feastival organisers feel they can no longer provide this free event going forward. This cancellation follows on from the disappearance of the annual community Bonfire and Firework Display.

2026-03-17 Gun Incident in Garforth

On Sunday evening police were called to reports of men fighting in Kennet Lane, Garforth. Officers, including armed response, attended after a gun was reported. A search of a vehicle at the scene recovered what turned out to be a BB gun. One man was arrested on suspicion of assault. Further checks led to a second man being arrested. Both are in custody as Leeds CID continue their investigation.

Garforth Town picked up their second home win in a week on Saturday with a well-deserved victory over Bradford Park Avenue. Owen Marshall capitalised when goalkeeper Campbell could only palm a header into his path on eleven minutes. Adam Haw equalised with his first chance of the match on twenty-six minutes to level it up going into the break. A Charlie Marshall double put the Miners into an unassailable lead, which rarely looked threatened.

A man was left with a fractured spine after angry thug Dale Day, 28, turned on him near Garforth railway station. The man tried to intervene when Dale Day was damaging fences on Aberford Road. 2026-01-30 Waste collection Scheme

From 13 January, Sherburn residents can pay for their licence for the 2026 garden waste collection service. A licence costs ?52 for collections between March and early December. The licence covers one 240-litre wheelie bin to be emptied fortnightly. Anyone who wants to have more than one bin emptied, will need to pay for a licence for each additional bin.

From 2nd March till 4th December a section of the Ridge Road over the railway bridge will be closed to traffic whilst the bridge is replaced to accommodate overhead cables on the rail track. Vehicles will be diverted via the A63 and A642 and the diversion will be clearly signposted.

Seven young students from Stagecoach Performing Arts Garforth and Wetherby have appeared in the latest series of Channel 5?s Animal Care Club, filmed at locations across Yorkshire. The children were selected to take part after submitting headshots and self-tapes, and went on to help care for pets, farm animals, wildlife and zoo animals. The successful students, aged 7-9 and from Garforth, Micklefield, Rothwell, Methley and Wetherby, assisted vets and animal carers at sanctuaries, wildlife centres and farms across the region learning first-hand how to care for animals while being part of a national TV production.

An inquest has been opened for a Sherburn sixth-form student who died in a crash between a car driven by a Leeds woman and a minibus carrying nine teenagers. Eleanor Hague, 16, died in the collision involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a Hyundai i10 car on Toulston Lane in Tadcaster on 1st December.

Garforth ended their away fixtures for 2025 with another stunning win. Dan Coupland got Town off to an early lead when he slotted home from the spot on fourteen minutes. Max Tweddle then doubled the lead with a free-kick, before Luke Aldrich put the Miners into a commanding three nil lead at half time. Charlie Marshall continued his scoring streak by netting twice in the second period.

From Monday 29th December at 11.30am to Sunday 25th January there will be no train service between Micklefield and York. Leeds to York train services will terminate at Micklefield and passengers can continue their journey on an hourly replacement bus service.
